Study Show Low Carb Diet More Effective Compare To Others

ATLANTA - Atkins Diet had again proven itself the most effective weight loss program 5 years after it creator Dr. Atkins passed away on April 2003. A study, released on Thursday in The New England Journal of Medicine based on 322 dieters (277 men and 45 women) show that low carbohydrate diets such as the Atkins regime is the most effective way to lose weight.

The long study which last for two years, was carried out in a controlled environment at an isolated nuclear research facility in Israel where the workers can't easily go out for lunch. In the research dieters are assign one the 3 eating programs as below:

  • A Low fat diet based on American Heart Association guidelines with about 30 percent fat

  • Low-carbohydrate diet based on the Atkins diet regime

  • Mediterranean diet

Result of the study surprise many researches and Atkins diet's critics as it significantly show that low-carb diet such as Atkins Diet not only improved cholesterol more than the other two but is the most effect weight loss program among all. Many critics had predicted the opposite way.

Following is the summary of the study :

  • Most weight loss was achieved in the first five months : Low-carbohydrate dieters lost 14 pounds compare to low-fat and Mediterranean dieters lost about 10 pounds during this period.

  • By the end study (2 years) all the dieters had regained some weight : Low-carb diet showed net loss of 10.3 pounds, Mediterranean diet loss 10lbs and the low-fat dieters showed only 6.5 pounds.

  • Men did better on the low-carbohydrate diets, losing 11 pounds compared with 9 pounds for the Mediterranean diet.

  • Women on the Mediterranean diet lose 14 pounds compared with 5 pounds on the low-carbohydrate diet.

  • Low-carb diet trigger the most improvement in several cholesterol measures, including the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL, the "good" cholesterol.

  • All dieters show improvements in the ratios of good to bad cholesterol.
